Many Kiwanians participated in the Random Acts of Kindness day, but we decided to spread the activities over two days. On Friday, November 4th, we helped out at Hopewell Homes, and on Saturday, November 5th, we helped out at Shelldale School.
I personally participated on Friday, November 4th, when we went to Hopewell Homes just North of Guelph. Myself, along with numerous other Kiwanis volunteers there to help, were organized by John Oosterhuis, who needed some help with the outdoor work on the property. Rakes, shovels, hoes, and makeshift wheelbarrows (children’s wagons) were grabbed and the digging of the gardens commenced! We were charged with the duty of removing all weeds from the gardens on the property, and raking and sweeping up the massive amounts of fall leaves that had dropped to the ground. We all dug in with gusto, and with the help of about 8 people we were able to do a decent cleaning job in about two hours. While we were doing this a couple of other Kiwanis volunteers were working on putting up the strings of Christmas lights around the exterior of the house. Things were looking clean and festive when we left, and it charges us up to do this again (and not wait for the next Random Acts of Kindness day). Good work to everyone that helped out both days!
